Christ Church Grammar School 2019

Flight Over
Flying from Nashville to Perth, Australia, is no easy task. We left Nashville late afternoon and flew four hours to LA. Next, we boarded our flight to Sydney at around midnight, and got comfortable for our fifteen hour flight. Once we arrived in Sydney, we completed the last leg of our journey by flying another four hours to the most remote city on earth, Perth.

School Experience

At Christ Church Grammar School we attended many interesting classes. Some of the highlights were the woodworking class and the Health and Wellbeing class. They had a rotating block schedule with six 50 minute periods each day. Additionally, there were two athletic classes: sports science and physical education in the schedule. It was great to get to meet the teachers and students at Christ Church and also to see all the similarities and differences between their school and ours.

Home Experience
Marc and I both stayed with two amazing families. They were exceptionally kind and made us feel at home for the whole time we were there. Haynes stayed with a family of five, with three brothers. Dinners were filled with playful banter and lots of jokes between the six of us. In our free time, we would watch and talk about the NBA, playing board games, and throw the footy. The host family that Marc stayed with had two brothers and a younger sister. They had delicious dinners and met their extended family.

Weekends were filled with rugby, in which both Marc and Haynes got to not only practice with the team, but start on the rugby team. Haynes got to go on the main river that runs through Perth, as well as visiting the oldest prison in Australia. The cuisine in Perth was excellent as Haynes got to experience Thai and Vietnamese food, as well as fresh seafood. One of Haynes' favorite meals was when his family got Thai street food in downtown Perth. Haynes'  family also drove him 3 hours down south to Dunsborough, a beautiful beach town where they sometimes hold the surfing championships. In this town, Haynes saw kangaroos and beautiful beach landscape, as well as a massive Jarrah forest.

My host family enjoyed eating out most weekend nights with either just the immediate family or the extended family as well. We ate many delicious and different foods such as Chinese, Italian, and Japanese. One weekend we also went to the beaches to the south of Perth. There we went around seeing caves, lighthouses, and vineyards. Another weekend we attended an Aussie rules footy game where the Fremantle Dockers played.

We would like to thank the Warner Family, Mrs. Scholer, and Mr. Gioia for providing this unique and life changing experience. We would also like to thank Mr. Saggers and the administration over at Christ Church Grammar School for welcoming us to their school.
